I keep seeing stuff about Lord of the Flies going around

Obviously, the individual experiences of the people making the posts - re: teachers, lessons, the way they were forced to study the book - aren’t up for debate

but like, I feel that people might not have the whole story here and as someone who knows far too much about literature, I wanted to talk about it a little

Sir William Golding wrote Lord of the Flies in response to an earlier novel called The Coral Island. In The Coral Island, a small group of upper-class British boys from a boarding school get stranded on an island and have an absolutely wonderful time. They look back on it as a fond adventure, where they had a little vacation, invented things, and generally made their well-bred high society English parents proud.

Sir William Golding read that novel and was disgusted by the way that R. M. Ballantyne used the plot as a huge essay on the superior intellect and higher morality of English folk (read: white people). The boys in The Coral Island eventually have to seek the aid of Christian missionaries (who are there to convert the local Polynesian populace) to save them from the natives who are written as raping pillaging amoral cannibals.

Sir William Golding set out to write a more realistic novel, by the way, using the same names for his main characters as Ballantyne did (although Golding’s characters are slightly younger). So, all the posts about Lord of the Flies showing the “human condition” insofar as it pertains to young middle-class British boys who grew up in a boarding house in the middle of the Cold War are correct. But I get the feeling that most people don’t realize that was the point of the novel.

Lord of the Flies was meant as a huge “fuck you” to the ingrained belief that English people are the most noble and wise of all people and thus incapable of descending into savagery. I doubt it was ever meant to be a sweeping generalized metaphor for the universal savage nature of humanity, and shame on the teachers who force that interpretation on their students.

I wish that the information in this post were told to students reading Lord of the Flies more often, considering that this context is necessary for understanding the book.

I used to study Golding and I’m so happy to see a post about this!  Basically all the good Golding scholars agree that Lord of the Flies is intended as a condemnation specifically of western positivism and superiority, not a condemnation of human nature.  Golding believed that good societies were possible, but that he was not living in one.  (Relevant side facts for the curious: Golding was a sailor and teacher who based some of the boys’ behavior on the behaviors of his male students and fellow sailors.  He also drew on Ancient Greco-Roman mythology and literature, which is both rife with examples of horrific, inhumane behavior AND considered the foundation of western society.)  When white/western/imperialist/etc. people read Golding’s books and decide he means all societies are evil, it shows that they are incapable of not conceiving of themselves as the best society – “If he believes OUR society is evil, he must think ALL societies are evil, because of course we’re the BEST society, and the others must be worse than ours” even though the other societies are not seen in most of his books and may be doing just fine.

As a sidenote, Golding was a really interesting literary figure in that he would actually publicly argue with critics who gave what he thought were unacceptably wrong interpretations of his novels.  He refused to agree that death of the author had limitless application.  So there are actually quotes from Golding about how most people read Lord of the Flies (and some of his other books) wrong and it’s pissing him off/making him sad and please just stop already.

2. It’s not worth the regret. Either by yourself if you failed or just simply left scars, or the regret everyone else feels by not doing enough to help you.

  • When she was old enough to understand where Bill and Charlie were going every year, she would cry for weeks because “those are my big brothers, Mum, I need them here!”. When these little fits happened, Fred and George were the first respondents to try and make her laugh. This is why she felt closest to them as she grew older.
  • Because they were so close in age, Ginny and Ron were tied to the hip until one day when he was seven and she was six, Ron told her he can’t be best friends with his little sister anymore, people might think it weird. This broke Ginny’s heart, but the two became close again as time went on. 
  • Ginny would tag along with Fred and George when they visited the village, even when they didn’t ask her too. Ginny loved these trips more than anything because she got to spend time with her favorite twins. 
  • When Ginny was the last Weasley child left at home, she wrote her brothers hundreds of notes asking about classes, teachers, and friends. Fred and George would tell her about pranks they played (she hid these notes from her mother), Percy would tell her how stressed he was becoming (especially because it was OWL year for him), and Ron would tell her all about Harry Potter and the bossy girl in his class who always tells him what to do (Ginny knew immediately just from one letter that he liked her).
  • During her first year, due to being possessed half the year, Ginny didn’t really make any friends, and was branded shy among her peers. No one really talked to her, which she was okay with because she was scared something was wrong with her.
  • Her second year, fresh from the horrors of the Chamber, Ginny decided it was time to make friends. The first person she became friends with was Ron’s “bossy best friend” Hermione. The two girls clicked immediately and were like sisters. Ginny also became friends with her dorm mates and told them she was just shy her first year. Due to her nice and caring nature, Ginny became very popular. 
  • One day when Peeves was trying to annoy her, Ginny turned around and screamed “I AM FRED AND GEORGE’S LITTLE SISTER AND IF YOU DON’T LEAVE ME ALONE I’LL GO GET THEM”. From that day on, Peeves listened to her. 
  • Ginny taught Luna how to fly a broom and play Quidditch because Luna loved watching her play. Luna taught Ginny how to make charms and earrings, which Ginny would wear proudly. If anyone called Luna “Looney” and refused to stop, she would Bat Bogey Hex them into next week. 
  • At the Yule Ball, away from her brothers’ peering eyes, she gave Neville a kiss on the mouth, which caused him to turn bright red and her to giggle. 
  • Also at the Yule Ball, Fred and George both asked to dance with her seeing as they were her big brothers and they have the right. They danced like idiots together for about 10 minutes. 
  • When she had a nightmare, Ginny would find Hermione and they would stay up together braiding each other’s hair and talking about everything but Ginny’s nightmare. If Hermione was tired the next morning, she would just say she was studying because she knew Ginny would be embarrassed. Ginny was grateful.
  • Ginny was a complete daddy’s girl and always knew what to say to get information from Arthur. Of course, she never used this against him, but her and her father were quite close. 
  • After the War, Ginny and Fleur became very close and Ginny’ apologized for being so rude. Fleur forgave her and the two went on to have a great friendship, which resulted in many shopping trips. 
  • George gave Ginny a wonderful new broom for her 17th birthday which was signed from both him and Fred. She hugged him and wouldn’t let go until she was finally coaxed off by her mother.

Just a reminder when Sorting people, the main difference between loyalty of a Hufflepuff and a Slytherin is that a Hufflepuff will be loyal no matter who you are. They will be loyal because you are a Hufflepuff, or a Hogwarts student, even if they’ve never known you before. Slytherins can be just as caring and loyal, perhaps even more so, as a Hufflepuff, except who you are is everything. They will be loyal because they know you, because you are their person. Given the choice between saving someone they know and or someone they don’t, a Hufflepuff would have difficulty choosing between which person should live or die because they care about Person B simply for the fact that they are human. Whereas a Slytherin would immediately point to the person they know and say “Her.” Both are Loyalist houses, but there are different kinds of Loyalty. Remember Narcissa Malfoy, who at the slightest possibility of her son being alive was willing to defy Voldemort and go against everything her family had wanted for decades for the smallest chance of making her son safe. Loyalty is everything to Slytherins and Hufflepuffs. They are many different types of bravery, of intelligence, so why not loyalty?

haha but i feel like this ignores common sense!

loyal people are loyal/helpful to everyone can still be more loyal to one than another especially a close friend or family member or THEIR CHILD versus just being loyal in general - you might be conflicted but you’re not gonna be like ‘welp, sorry kid but there’s a stranger right over there who needs saving so bye’

it’s not like hufflepuffs just love everybody all the time and can’t put a thought together in their heads about who they love more lol. like ‘oops i love all of humanity so whatamigonnado?’ but i do like the idea of slytherin sort of loyalty where you pick and choose, in a way that loyalty is very special. it can be earned. (or used to receive something in return which a lot of death eater loyalty does buy for itself)

haha but i do agree about slytherins being loyal in a different way like bellatrix was extremely loyal to voldemort and he gave her special priviledges in return, loyalty in a way is a tool within that social circle and can expand into priviledge-building (malfoys were not only loyal to voldemort for the cause they believed in but because that loyalty is passed onto your children and that gives them perks)

Hey so you’ve kinda misunderstood what I meant about Hufflepuff loyalty. It’s more along the lines of the mindset of a soldier, or a patriot. They are  loyal to organizations, to ideas. Think of that line in the second book: No one from the House of the Loyal went without a home that winter. A Hufflepuff would be willing to give a home to another Hufflepuff because you are a Hufflepuff, you are a part of their House and that is enough reason to give someone your help. Because you are a Hufflepuff in need of a home, or they will stand with you against Voldemort because you are a Hogwarts student and so are they.

Whereas a Slytherin would open their home to someone they care about in a heartbeat, if it was someone they cared about that was in need they would do anything for them. But it’s not enough for them to be a Slytherin, they need to be someone they care about too.

Imagine this scenario: A Hufflepuff and a Slytherin are both soldiers in the same squadron and a grenade goes off. Both the Slytherin and the Hufflepuff would be willing to jump on the grenade, but the Hufflepuff would jump on the grenade to save everyone,because it is the right thing to do, because they are fighting to save their country. A Slytherin would jump on the grenade to save their squad. 

Just because we haven’t met a Dark Lord Hufflepuff doesn’t mean there hasn’t ever been one. Just imagine, a Hufflepuff Dark Lord capable of enkindling that kind of loyalty, backed by an army of mindlessly loyal and hard working Hufflepuffs? Think of an entire army backed by people like Bellatrix Lestrange, and wonder how they were ever stopped. In the past 70 years there already were two Great Dark Lords, Grindlewald and Voldemort. Don’t tell me there’s never been a Hufflepuff Dark Lord, or a Ravenclaw, or a Gryffindor.

Also, Hufflepuffs Dark Lords are more likely to use loyalty as their primary tool of persuasion than a Slytherin. Voldemort didn’t try to enhance his followers’ sense of loyalty but their fear and greed.Voldemort amassed his followers primarily through charisma, appeals to people’s sense of ambition and greed, and then mostly fear in the second war. Fidelity was just a pleasant side affect from a few token, but it wasn’t a weapon in Voldemort’s arsenal because he doesn’t value it. He thinks that this kind of loyalty makes people weak and he never really tried to cultivate it. With Voldemort, here is no singular person he is loyal to, he doesn’t really understand loyalty between humans, although he was very devoted to his snake, Nagini, so much that he even puts part of his soul into Nagini. Even Voldemort is loyal to something.

Loyalty can be just as harmful as ambition if it is given mindlessly. Justice may be blind but loyalty never should be. For all their faults, loyalty is less of a double edged sword for a Snake than a Badger. To earn a Slytherin’s loyalty is no small feat. A Slytherin is very choosy with their loyalty and are less likely to be led astray than a Hufflepuff, although that’s not to say a Hufflepuff can’t be harmed just as much and feel pain or have their faith in their system shaken. Think of a soldier learning about the horrifying things their country has done, think of a loyal SHIELD agent who found out SHIELD is Hydra.

Also, you mentioned something about how I thought Hufflepuffs love everybody all the time, but I think you misunderstood me. Just because you are loyal to someone doesn’t mean that a Hufflepuff has to like them. Again, I am using the analogy of the two soldiers. The Hufflepuff soldier may hate the guy standing next to him but he would still take a bullet for him because he is a soldier. Whereas a Slytherin may not like one of the guys in his squad very much but he is part of your squad. Think of Captain Malcolm Reynolds, coming back for the Tams and when Simon asks why, you hate me Mal responds because you are a part of my crew. It’s not because you are a human being in need of saving but you are one of my people.

I’m just adding this in to address one of your earlier concerns but Hufflepuffs tend to prioritize their attention by who needs it most. For instance, if a close friend is shot in the arm, but someone else is shot in the torso, a Puff’s immediate concern would be the person shot in the torso, whereas the Snake’s immediate concern would be their friend. If someone they regard as theirs is in a possible life threatening situation, their first concern is their friend, regardless of the severity of the injuries of the other person.

A Hufflepuff prioritizes their loyalty depending on the situation, but a Slytherin has priorities that captivate their allegiance and are their primary concern. Always.

You may have noticed I like soldier analogies, but soldiers and patriots are very likely to be Hufflepuffs. It takes a certain kind of mindset to be able to carry out orders from people that you have never met, and probably never will but you do it any way because you have faith in the organization.

Never let any one say Hufflepuffs are wimps. They’ll eat you alive, and they’ll bring everyone they know along with them.

Slytherins can be just as caring as the common stereotype for Hufflepuff, and Hufflepuffs can be just as ruthless as a stereotypical Slytherin. Loyalty to a select few is not better or worse than loyalty to a collective whole. It’s all about motivations, and what you do with them that determine if you are a good person. 

It’s my biggest critique about the Harry Potter books; we’ve never seen someone who embodies all the negative traits of Hufflepuff, and all of the benevolent traits of Slytherin. I wish JK Rowling had Harry befriend a Slytherin, who would stand with Harry against their family because Harry is their person and you don’t abandon your people, and a Hufflepuff who stood by Voldemort because they are my family you don’t turn your back on family.
